Pets Are Joy Delivery Systems (ft. Mr. Beans)

What happens when you ask people to share their joy moments? You get a LOT of pets. In this episode, Lacey and Sara read through community submissions—cats, dogs, horses, and the small moments that matter.

From medical relief that's less scary than expected, to forced cat snuggles, foster cats finally feeling safe, prosthetic users walking further than they have in a year, and horses leaving surprise gifts in front yards—this episode is about the moments worth celebrating, no matter how small.

Plus, the legendary tale of Mr. Beans (the protective neighborhood cat) and why "lowkey excellent" is everyone's new favorite phrase.

In This Episode:

  • Community joy moments: medical relief, pets finding safety, autumn afternoons
  • Why pets are basically joy delivery systems
  • The "lowkey excellent" phrase worth wrapping yourself in

Lacey:

Welcome to Joy Moments, the podcast are we spread stories of joy to make

2

:

ripples of joy throughout the world.

3

:

I'm Lacey here with Sarah.

4

:

Hi Sarah.

5

:

I am really excited today because we're

gonna dive into a bunch of threads

6

:

that we got as a response to a call

out for Joy, and it is delightful.

7

:

Sara: It was delightful when

I went on and looked it, yeah.

8

:

It made me so happy and I'm like,

this is what social media should be.

9

:

Just sharing those moments of joy.

10

:

That would be amazing.

11

:

Lacey: Oh, okay.

12

:

Skincare 360 says, just

got a physio assessment.

13

:

I thought my glute pain was due

to my back injury from last year.

14

:

Turns out it's just a muscle strain

and nothing is wrong with my back.

15

:

Ah, how.

16

:

Sorry.

17

:

As a, sick person, I'll say, I hear

this and I'm so excited that it's not

18

:

so, it's not like everything's normal.

19

:

It's like, oh no, we have a

solution and it's a less severe one.

20

:

So much joy.

21

:

Sara: I resonate that after I had my son,

I started having these intense pain in

22

:

my head and I just convinced myself that

it was a tumor and I had a new baby and I

23

:

was like, I don't have time for a tumor.

24

:

I was just convinced.

25

:

And then the doctor told me they

were migraines and there was

26

:

this like bittersweet of like.

27

:

she knows what it is and

there's a solution for it.

28

:

So yes, I can relate to that.

29

:

Lacey: The next one has a

comment from Sarah on it.

30

:

Look at you, Sarah.

31

:

Interacting, I am realizing I did

not think this through of having

32

:

to read people's screen names.

33

:

Kokomo Josephine, I think is what this is.

34

:

Says my cat demanded forced snuggles this

morning and it makes me hold him like a

35

:

baby and give him kisses and belly rubs.

36

:

It's the best part of my day.

37

:

Sara: I didn't know cats could do that.

38

:

Lacey: There's, Oh, and her name's Lacey.

39

:

So I get, I got excited about that.

40

:

A Lacey from Ohio.

41

:

Anyway, she's got cows, but she

also carries her cat in a baby

42

:

carrier sometimes on her chest.

43

:

Yeah.

44

:

So that's what made me follow her.

45

:

'cause I was like, if you can do that, you

must be, we talked about how in another

46

:

life, I think I was a dairy farmer.

47

:

Yeah.

48

:

So there's also part

of that, as well Cows.

49

:

Sara: I love this podcast.

50

:

You just never know what's gonna come up.

51

:

I love it.

52

:

Lacey: Oh, another cat one.

53

:

see Rose Said my new foster cat,

who after two weeks is still scared.

54

:

Looked up the window for the

first time, she's usually hidden.

55

:

My heart just exploded.

56

:

A little bit to feel that safety after

such a long time of not feeling safe.

57

:

Oh,

58

:

Sara: I know.

59

:

I

60

:

Lacey: love it.

61

:

Sara: for the cat and it makes me happy

for people like her that exist in the

62

:

world who take in animals that are

63

:

Lacey: Our friend Sarah Berry does it.

64

:

And every time I'm like you magical

human beings who are fostering animals.

65

:

I could never.

66

:

Sara: I know, so thank you to

all those people out there who

67

:

Lacey: Mm-hmm.

68

:

Annie, G 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

posted a photo of Waldo.

69

:

It says, wanted customers,

no experience necessary.

70

:

Saw this in my local market.

71

:

I like that.

72

:

It makes me smile.

73

:

I this next one I've been meaning to show

my kids and I haven't shown them yet.

74

:

It's another visual from, it's Cook 1942.

75

:

This made me happy for some reason.

76

:

And it's a picture of what looks like

a real sponge and a real, starfish that

77

:

are the right colors that says scientists

found a real life, Patrick and SpongeBob

78

:

during an Ocean exposition expedition.

79

:

And I just know my children are

gonna love that, and I just haven't

80

:

had the chance to show them yet.

81

:

So, yeah.

82

:

let's see here.

83

:

Cynical medic said, I walked further

today than I have in over a year.

84

:

I finally trust my second prosthetic.

85

:

Oh.

86

:

Again, as a sick person, I know

that feeling of like I did more

87

:

than I have done recently, and

just the amount of pride that you

88

:

can feel in that is so amazing.

89

:

Sara: And that goes right to

the heart of why I am so happy

90

:

about joy Moments we want to help

celebrate those moments with you.

91

:

Lacey: Yeah.

92

:

Sara: to a lot of people, they'll think,

well, it was, I didn't run a marathon.

93

:

It's not that big of a deal, but

it's like, no, these are the moments.

94

:

To celebrate.

95

:

Lacey: Yes,

96

:

Sara: that's amazing.

97

:

And we're so happy for you.

98

:

I'm almost crying 'cause I'm

99

:

Lacey: I know.

100

:

Sara: know this person.

101

:

Lacey: Quirky, uncle Dave said, seeing

a video from my friend showing her pet

102

:

happily eating after a major surgery.

103

:

the, words are hard.

104

:

Hold on.

105

:

The theme of this podcast is just that

pets are amazing and break so much joy.

106

:

It doesn't even have to be our pet.

107

:

Sara: I think the joy for

me in that is his handle.

108

:

Quirky

109

:

Lacey: Oh, I believe, Kirk and Dave

and I have had exchanges in the past,

110

:

and I told him I have an Uncle Dave,

so it makes me, fond of him already.

111

:

Jasmina 61 says Our kitty max.

112

:

See, we are just catting it out today.

113

:

Our King Max is eating solid food

and crunchy snacks after not having

114

:

an appetite for about a week.

115

:

Oh.

116

:

The relief that comes with your

pet doing something like this.

117

:

'cause they can't tell you what's wrong.

118

:

They can't tell you anything like that.

119

:

So it when you can see an actual tangible

thing that they're feeling better.

120

:

So good.

121

:

The rest of these are very s coded.

122

:

I'm just gonna say that right away.

123

:

We've got Mallie Moses.

124

:

I said I went to the cottage with my

little dog this afternoon for work.

125

:

our walnut tree is prolific this year,

so we picked up a basket full of walnuts

126

:

and raked a bunch of leaves, a low key.

127

:

Excellent afternoon.

128

:

Sara: That makes me happy picturing that.

129

:

I

130

:

Lacey: You also said low key.

131

:

Excellent is my new favorite phrase.

132

:

Sara: Oh, lowkey.

133

:

Excellent.

134

:

Oh, I just, I wanna wrap

myself in that phrase.

135

:

Isn't that amazing?

136

:

Lacey: It is amazing.

137

:

I agree.

138

:

Lowkey excellent.

139

:

Sara: Oh, that's,

140

:

Lacey: Yep.

141

:

Sara: I'm, I'm a handle obsessed.

142

:

I want that to be my new handle.

143

:

Lowkey excellent.

144

:

Lacey: Elena Evening star

said a woodpecker flew over

145

:

my head and sat in the tree.

146

:

It was very beautiful.

147

:

Sara: Love that.

148

:

very Sarah.

149

:

Lacey: And our last one from Sherry Cox,

96 an hour walk in beautiful sunshine.

150

:

Also very Sarah coated.

151

:

These are your people, Sarah.

152

:

Sara: Well, and again, part of

this podcast is also helping people

153

:

understand like where do you tap

into joy moments . for that.

154

:

It's like the five senses, right?

155

:

It's like outside, like,

what are you seeing?

156

:

What are you smelling?

157

:

What are you hearing?

158

:

You know, a woodpecker,

a walnut, a cat, a dog.

159

:

on that note, I have a funny joy moment.

160

:

I just remembered.

161

:

Lacey: Yeah.

162

:

Sara: So of course I'm friendly with my

neighbors one of my neighbors who I'm

163

:

friendly with, I got a text from her

at 7:00 AM and then we're friendly, but

164

:

we're not, 7:00 AM texting friendly.

165

:

And I was like, whoa, what is going

on with my neighbor this morning?

166

:

And so I open it up.

167

:

And there's a picture of two horses.

168

:

She's standing in her house taking a

picture out her window of two horses.

169

:

She does not own horses.

170

:

she said, Hey, does your, does your

neighbor have the number of the

171

:

person who these horses belong to?

172

:

And we've met these horses before.

173

:

This is not the first

time this has happened.

174

:

we got that figured out and

then, we walk outside and my son

175

:

points to the middle of the yard.

176

:

What is that?

177

:

And I look out in the middle of the yard,

huge pile of horse poo in my front yard.

178

:

I just started laughing.

179

:

I laughed so hard.

180

:

I'm like, not every day you have

a pile of horse poo in your front

181

:

yard when you don't own horses.

182

:

Lacey: I love the idea that these

horses are, I, I wanna write a

183

:

children's book about them now because

they're serial escape artists, right.

184

:

And in my mind, they're like.

185

:

Todd and Kathy, just these like

honoree horses getting out and being

186

:

like, well, let's go and walk around.

187

:

I guess like they were not gonna go far.

188

:

Sara: The first time, they were

at another neighbor's house that

189

:

we met them when the owner came.

190

:

Yeah.

191

:

She was very nonplussed.

192

:

She's like, yeah, they do this.

193

:

I am like, she should be passing out her

phone number to everyone in the area.

194

:

Just if you, my husband and I were

joking that there should be a QR

195

:

code on the horses, like branded.

196

:

So you can just scan your phone and be

like, scene then enter your, coordinates.

197

:

Lacey: Since we've been so cat

heavy, I would like to share, my

198

:

own experience of a cat getting out.

199

:

and it was when we lived in our old

house, and it was only, it was before

200

:

we had Luna, it was just indie.

201

:

I was taking Indie for a walk.

202

:

So Indie is like a 80 pound

black lab slash Pyrenees mix.

203

:

He was a big boy.

204

:

Very sweet, very gentle,

but he sucked on the leash.

205

:

I just wanna say that like he just

wanted to pull and go everywhere.

206

:

So we were really working

on leash training.

207

:

So we are walking down the street,

Indy and I, and at one point I look

208

:

across the street and there's a

black cat staring at us, like laser

209

:

eyed looking, staring us down.

210

:

Alright.

211

:

And so I'm like, okay, well, we'll just.

212

:

oh, I think it was in front of us.

213

:

So we crossed the street thinking,

I don't wanna deal with that cat.

214

:

I don't know what Indy's gonna do.

215

:

He was the rescue.

216

:

We're still, you know, and

so we crossed the street.

217

:

Well, unbeknownst to us, we

crossed closer to this cat's house.

218

:

And so the cat naturally,

apparently is very protective of

219

:

its space and starts following us.

220

:

It crosses the street and starts

following us and attacking.

221

:

Indie's back, like this small

cat is, you know what I mean?

222

:

And indie's like, he's like, I

don't want to be a part of this.

223

:

I don't wanna be a part of this narrative.

224

:

If we wanna quote Taylor Swift,

like he's getting attacked

225

:

by this cat on, on his back.

226

:

And I, I don't know what to do.

227

:

I'm still a new-ish dog owner.

228

:

I've never had cats.

229

:

I'm like, what am I supposed to do?

230

:

So my solution was, get the F outta here.

231

:

Right?

232

:

So I take him and I'm.

233

:

I'm just trying to get him down the

street and he's trying to go with me,

234

:

but the cat is following us, attacking

him, and I'm just trying to get us out

235

:

there and out of nowhere I hear Mr.

236

:

Beans and this man comes just chugging

down the street, running, comes, picks

237

:

the cat up, looks at me and says sorry.

238

:

And just walks the cat back

to his house and I'm just.

239

:

flabbergasted, no other

acknowledgements of it.

240

:

I see the house that they go to.

241

:

That's when I realized oh, okay, we

actually went towards this house.

242

:

I think he may have said he hates dogs.

243

:

Like that's it.

244

:

Like that is the only amount

of information that I got.

245

:

And so India and I are just

like, did that just happened?

246

:

Like I, I are both very confused, looking

at each other and that kind of thing.

247

:

So we go home and tell Joe about it.

248

:

And then naturally, Mr.

249

:

Beans is always out now every time we

walk, but now that we know each other, we

250

:

can suss it out and that kind of thing.

251

:

But yeah, I will never forget this man

hauling it down the street, yelling Mr.

252

:

Beans over and over again.

253

:

Sara: I want that to be my new phrase.

254

:

You know how when you want to

swear, but then you don't wanna

255

:

swear in front of your kids or in

256

:

Lacey: Yeah.

257

:

Sara: I want that to be my new swear, Mr.

258

:

Beans.

259

:

Lacey: yeah.

260

:

Sara: I have a funny memory of Katz.

261

:

My grandparents' house, they always

had multiple cats who always ended,

262

:

came in from unique situations.

263

:

So they were kind of

half feral, not feral,

264

:

Lacey: Yeah.

265

:

Sara: they were not interested in

people, they were na, they were nasty.

266

:

Lacey: Mm-hmm.

267

:

Sara: grow up with nice

cat experiences anyways.

268

:

They always had a standard

poodle, which is like a big dog

269

:

Lacey: Yeah.

270

:

Sara: one of their poodles.

271

:

It was so funny.

272

:

You could be sitting in one place and

you'd watch this dog just casually walk.

273

:

Across like the room, then you

could kind of see him, he'd key

274

:

in on a cat and he would just kind

of like, almost like playing tag.

275

:

He would like pretend to like tag the cat.

276

:

And then the next thing you know,

the dog is running in the opposite

277

:

direction, and then the cat

runs in the opposite direction.

278

:

And then if you just sit

long enough in this one room.

279

:

all of a sudden, like the cat would

run back in and the dog would, it

280

:

was like watching a cartoon and you

just had to sit in one place, but the

281

:

dog would always antagonize the cat

and the cats did not want to play.

282

:

That cracked me up,

283

:

Lacey: oh Pets.

284

:

Sara: Mr.

285

:

Lacey: This is a pet themed episode now.

286

:

Sara: Oh yeah.

287

:

I read the newsletter this morning

and Lacey is cracks me up with

288

:

the picture of the cat looking

at the ball and then it was here.

289

:

This cat is, what did you

290

:

Lacey: I said, this is me

and Sarah waiting for you

291

:

to submit questions for us.

292

:

For no shame in our game.

293

:

We're the cat, you're the ball.

294

:

I think I over explained

it a little bit, but yeah.

295

:

Sara: If you have a joy

moment, you wanna share if it.

296

:

It doesn't even have to involve animals.

297

:

Please don't misunderstand

the premise of this show.

298

:

Anything that brought you joy, if it was

a pile of horse poo in your front yard

299

:

that you weren't expecting, that's great.

300

:

Lacey: Mm-hmm.

301

:

Sara: relate.

302

:

if it's anything else that made you

laugh, made you smile, just we wanna

303

:

celebrate those joy moments with you.

304

:

Lacey: Yes, please.

305

:

Sara: it makes your joy moment

last longer, and then it might

306

:

bring joy to somebody else.

307

:

How beautiful is that?

308

:

And then

309

:

Lacey: I know.

310

:

Sara: will go on to

the whole world and the

311

:

Lacey: Yeah,

312

:

Sara: I'm only half joking.

313

:

Lacey: I know.

314

:

head to joyful support movement.com/submit

315

:

to submit joy moment and also any of

the other things for our podcasts.

316

:

Lacey: Thanks for sharing joy

moments with me today, Sarah.

317

:

Sara: you, Lacey.
