The Tooth Market: Supply, Demand, and Missing Inventory

We never expected to have such strong opinions about tooth logistics, but here we are.

Lacey navigates Isaac's first lost tooth (and the subsequent loss of that tooth somewhere in the house), while Sara spots an unexpected wildlife parade during a single walk and helps celebrate one of the most creative birthday gifts we've ever seen.

We talk about the surprising emotions that come with watching your kid grow up, the going rate for teeth in 2025, and why parenting requires more negotiation skills than anyone warns you about. We also dive into what happens when kids start thinking like entrepreneurs, the beauty of compounding joy ripples, and why three snakes in one walk feels like the universe saying hello.

This is real life in the middle. The part where you're simultaneously celebrating milestones and searching your couch cushions for lost body parts. The part where you make thank-you videos with your kid and discover you're actually having fun. The part where joy shows up in monarch butterflies and baby snakes trying to look tough.

Topics Covered:

  • Navigating first milestones and the emotions that come with parenting moments
  • Tooth fairy economics and negotiating with mythical beings
  • Creating together as quality time with kids
  • Joy ripples and how happiness compounds through creativity
  • Finding unexpected joy in ordinary walks and wildlife encounters

Lacey:

Welcome to Joy Moments where we take moments of joy and spread

2

:

them and ripples across the world.

3

:

I am Lacey here with my co-host Sarah.

4

:

Hi Sarah.

5

:

Sara: Hello, Lacey.

6

:

It's so good to see you.

7

:

Lacey: It's so good to see you two.

8

:

I am so excited to share

my joy moment today,

9

:

Sara: Go for it.

10

:

Lacey: We had a big, big moment

in the Tomlinson household.

11

:

We had our first tooth lost.

12

:

Isaac lost his first tooth, and it's just,

I, I didn't think I would care about this.

13

:

there just was this moment of like, oh

my gosh, he's getting so much bigger and.

14

:

It's also very funny and very US that,

he wanted it to happen at school.

15

:

Like he has told me this multiple times.

16

:

It was his front tooth on the top.

17

:

He's like, I wanted to happen at school.

18

:

'cause apparently they get a treasure

te chest if it happens at school

19

:

that they put the the tooth in.

20

:

And so I have very purposefully not

been ' cause I'm one of those people.

21

:

Like if someone's from a

sunburn, like I wanna peel it.

22

:

Like I just, I have those, I have

those, , compulsions we'll say.

23

:

And so I keep seeing his tooth

'cause it's his front one.

24

:

Like you can tell it's getting looser and

looser by how wonky it, it gets, you know?

25

:

Yesterday he came home from

school and he showed me, he's

26

:

like, look how loose it is mom.

27

:

And I'm like, oh my gosh.

28

:

Yes.

29

:

It is very loose.

30

:

I'm trying to play it cool.

31

:

I've been doing so good about playing it.

32

:

Cool.

33

:

Okay.

34

:

I.

35

:

I have never played

anything cool in my life.

36

:

And this is the first time

it's happening, right?

37

:

So he's unloading the dishwasher, he

is doing his tour after school, his

38

:

friend's over and he comes rushing

and he is like, mom, my tooth is

39

:

bleeding but it's not coming out.

40

:

And I was like, do you want me to pull it?

41

:

And He was like, well, let me try.

42

:

So we went and we got a paper towel and

he tried a couple times and there's blood.

43

:

So I'm like, it's coming out bud,

whether you do it or not, And he

44

:

was like, you go ahead and do it.

45

:

And on my second try I pulled

it and everyone's excited.

46

:

Right?

47

:

His friend's there.

48

:

he's like so excited about it.

49

:

He is like, the tooth fairy is coming.

50

:

All this stuff.

51

:

And I'm like, yes.

52

:

I get the, I get the joy of knowing

that my compulsion is now taken and

53

:

I didn't have to do anything weird.

54

:

Okay, so then the evening continues

on, and to no one's surprise in my

55

:

household, Isaac loses the tooth.

56

:

Like yes, he lost the tooth

of his mouth, but then he lost

57

:

it in our house somewhere.

58

:

And if you want to have a child.

59

:

Melts down it is like, what am I gonna do?

60

:

I, I have tooth fairy's coming.

61

:

What are we gonna do?

62

:

So much, so much stuff.

63

:

Spoiler alert for anyone listening.

64

:

I don't, if you don't wanna know

what the tooth fairy did, stop

65

:

listening now Or skip ahead, I dunno.

66

:

So we came up with the idea.

67

:

of all, we looked everywhere and

so now I just have to live with

68

:

the, the thought that there is

just a tooth somewhere in my house.

69

:

Who knows where it'll show up in.

70

:

Like if I had to guess, it's gonna

show up in like a week and a half.

71

:

' cause who knows what he did with it.

72

:

My, that's the A DHD.

73

:

It's finest of moving it and then

blaming it on me for him moving it

74

:

and being like, you moved in, bro.

75

:

I have not touched it.

76

:

Anyway, so.

77

:

decided that the tooth fairy, would leave

the tooth berry a note underneath his bed.

78

:

We would draw a picture

of a tooth on there.

79

:

We would leave a very nice note about

we lost the tooth, but we owe, like

80

:

if we find it, we'll give it to you.

81

:

please don't punish this stuff.

82

:

And the tooth Fair did come and

gave Isaac $5 for his first tooth.

83

:

Sara: You think the tooth fairy

is gonna do $5 for every tooth?

84

:

Lacey: I don't, he and I

had this talk this morning.

85

:

He was like, yeah, it'll probably be four.

86

:

And I'm like, I dunno.

87

:

I feel like the first

tooth gets to be special.

88

:

And after that they're

like a dollar or two.

89

:

And he was like, I don't know.

90

:

And I was like, if I was a guessing lady,

if I was betting, that's what I would bet.

91

:

Sara: First, did you get when you were,

'cause you had five siblings, right?

92

:

Lacey: Yeah, but I was the youngest.

93

:

See, I, it's so hard for me to

like really contextualize up

94

:

with like, being the youngest.

95

:

'cause I really feel like I grew

up more like an only child who just

96

:

had older siblings around sometimes.

97

:

Like, I didn't go through

anything with anybody else.

98

:

So, I think I got a dollar.

99

:

I don't really remember.

100

:

Sara: Again, anyone listening who

maybe wants to skip ahead or pause,

101

:

we're gonna discuss the tooth fairy

a little bit more in depth here.

102

:

there's definitely market variation of how

much the tooth fairy brings and I like,

103

:

I kind of had a pact with my neighbor

like, can you make sure your tooth

104

:

fairy is bringing between this range?

105

:

Because like the kids talk all the time,

I'm like, I need to have a comp on this.

106

:

Lacey: Which is why we went $5.

107

:

'cause we were asking when other kids

were around, like how much did the

108

:

tooth, and so $5 for the first one

seems to be a going rate around here.

109

:

Sara: I have a really funny story

about finding teeth My parents' house.

110

:

So the house I grew up in

but was no longer living in.

111

:

I would go back and visit and I would

stay, it wasn't the bedroom I grew up in.

112

:

It kind of became the guest bedroom.

113

:

there was this night stand with this

little tiny top drawer, and one day I

114

:

was staying there and I was visiting

and I pulled the droop and, and

115

:

immediately heard this like rattle and

it was just a drawer full of teeth.

116

:

And I kind of at first, like

my eyes bugged out and I'm

117

:

like, it was a lot of teeth.

118

:

And I was like, what is happening?

119

:

I'm not talking about 50 teeth.

120

:

I'm talking about like 10 or less.

121

:

And,

122

:

Lacey: Any, any teeth is

more teeth than you think.

123

:

Any tooth.

124

:

Sara: And my mom, my

mom loved to keep stuff.

125

:

But I was like, even for my mom,

this is a bit odd because at this

126

:

point I was in my thirties and

my siblings are older than me.

127

:

So I was like, even for

my mom, that's unhinged.

128

:

And then, , I talked to my sister,

she lived in my parents' house

129

:

when they moved from outta state to

in-state and were looking for a house.

130

:

And she had three kids and

they lived there for a while.

131

:

And so the tooth that they,

all the teeth that they lost

132

:

just ended up in that truck.

133

:

It was so funny.

134

:

Lacey: relate so hard to just,

let's just throw somewhere

135

:

and then forget about them.

136

:

Sara: Oh my gosh.

137

:

I love that story.

138

:

well, congrats to Isaac

on losing his first tooth.

139

:

That is.

140

:

Lacey: jazzed this morning.

141

:

He came running in.

142

:

Then this is my other favorite thing.

143

:

He was like, do you think if we find

the tooth and then I put the tooth

144

:

under my pillow, I'll get more money?

145

:

And I was like, no.

146

:

We literally said in the

note, we owe you a tooth.

147

:

Like don't try to game the system.

148

:

You turned.

149

:

Sara: He was thinking forward though.

150

:

Lacey: he is a very, money conscious kid.

151

:

We'll just say that.

152

:

he wants money.

153

:

Sara: I don't blame them

154

:

Lacey: I know.

155

:

Hey.

156

:

He's making deals.

157

:

I will say the interesting, other

interesting thing that happened this

158

:

morning is that Iris now is like,

well when I lose teeth, I don't want

159

:

the tooth fairy to take the tooth.

160

:

And I'm like, okay, we're

writing another note.

161

:

See if we can strike up a

deal with the tooth fairy.

162

:

' cause she's like, I gotta, I'm

gonna have to stay awake 'cause

163

:

I wanna talk to the tooth Fairy.

164

:

And I was like, I don't

think that's how it works.

165

:

It's kind of a Santa situation.

166

:

So I just.

167

:

I did not realize how many

logistics I would have to be talking

168

:

when it comes the tooth fairy.

169

:

that is a new thing for me.

170

:

Sara: Yes, yes.

171

:

Yeah, there's absolutely no way to be

prepared for all parenthood throws at you.

172

:

on the whole money conscious thing,

I do remember at one point my son

173

:

asking, does the tooth under his pillow

have to be his tooth to get money?

174

:

I was like, what is happening?

175

:

Where are you getting teeth?

176

:

Lacey: Market.

177

:

Sara: from, apparently

from my parents' house.

178

:

I don't, no, he meant like if you

found like if the dog lost a tooth,

179

:

like yeah, I don't know where else

he was gonna get teeth, but anyways,

180

:

Lacey: a money laundering

scheme with teeth,

181

:

Sara: money launder scheme,

182

:

that would be funny at school.

183

:

Like I'll give you a

dollar for your tooth.

184

:

'cause I know I'm gonna get

$5 from the tooth theory.

185

:

Lacey: I'm not gonna knock it.

186

:

Sara: By low sell high, the tooth market.

187

:

All right, so my joy moment, what I

love about this joy moment is it's

188

:

such a compounding joy moment, ripple.

189

:

Anyone who listens to joyful

support knows about Theresa, a

190

:

friend of mine, her daughter, and

Theresa for my son's birthday.

191

:

They sent, I don't know actually

how they made it, but it's

192

:

like a flip book of photos.

193

:

So, and they used their body to spell

out all the letters in Happy Birthday.

194

:

What was beautiful was in each photo they

were smiling, and then I was smiling,

195

:

imagining them doing this, and then

my son was happy, They were at some

196

:

kind of farmer's market doing this.

197

:

So think of all the

letters and happy birthday.

198

:

Lacey: That's a lot of letters.

199

:

Sara: And they used their bodies like this

is not their fingers, not their hands.

200

:

They fully used.

201

:

So sometimes it was one person,

sometimes it was two people, and

202

:

they spelled out happy birthday.

203

:

And then like, yeah, and then

it flipped automatically.

204

:

And then I think she even put a

song to it, which was really cool.

205

:

So that made me happy on so many levels.

206

:

I will never forget that.

207

:

And.

208

:

I just, it felt like a joy Ripple.

209

:

Can you imagine walking through a

farmer's market and you look over?

210

:

What are those people doing?

211

:

They're smiling.

212

:

They're bent over,

213

:

so anyone.

214

:

Lacey: another happy thing in our house

the past week is, Isaac's school was

215

:

having a fundraiser and he, he's a very

money conscious kid as we've discussed,

216

:

and so he really wanted to raise money.

217

:

His first thing was like, can I give $10?

218

:

And I was like, but calm down.

219

:

so another, he's also declared that he

wants to be a YouTuber, which is just

220

:

something I struggle with in general.

221

:

, But I've told him, I was like, if

you, I, we can do stuff like that.

222

:

If you wanna create, if you are creating,

I mean, we're not gonna post it.

223

:

He's not gonna be, you know what I mean?

224

:

But, I told him, I was like, come

up with ideas and we'll make YouTube

225

:

video, YouTube type videos and you

can practice and that kind of stuff.

226

:

And so I told him, I was

like, we should make you.

227

:

videos to try to get people to, to donate.

228

:

And so we made what I think is an epic

ask video, and then proceeded to make

229

:

you videos for the people who donated

as a way to solicit more donations.

230

:

Right.

231

:

we raised some money, so that was good.

232

:

did it usually just mean me sitting

there and making the videos?

233

:

Yes.

234

:

The act of creating it together

was so much fun and like a good

235

:

little activity for our household.

236

:

So I think that's something that I

don't always give enough credit to of

237

:

like, yes, outcome type thing might seem

overwhelming, is a barrier, but using

238

:

it as an opportunity to do an activity

together was really, really lovely.

239

:

Sara: And I saw the video

240

:

Lacey: I didn't even

send you the other ones.

241

:

they were like themed, like cinema themed.

242

:

So we had a horror one, that was, a

monster Violet called Attack of the Baby.

243

:

there was another one

that was like a mystery.

244

:

yeah.

245

:

Sara: I love that.

246

:

That's so beautiful.

247

:

Oh, So much joy.

248

:

Can I tell you another joy that

you're, that's gonna make you laugh?

249

:

Lacey: yes, please,

250

:

Sara: The other day we were doing joy

with the family, and I took a walk

251

:

and within this one walk in this one

specific area, I saw four monarch

252

:

butterflies, like newly hatched.

253

:

I saw three snakes,

three snakes in one walk.

254

:

I saw a praying mantis But three snakes

and a praying mantis and four monarchs.

255

:

Lacey: Like they knew you're coming,

Sarah, and they're like, let's

256

:

get out there and say hi to her.

257

:

Sara: What was really cute was I was

trying to get one of the snakes off the

258

:

road so it didn't get smooshed, and this

little tiny baby snake was all ferocious.

259

:

And he was like, well, I'm gonna get you.

260

:

And he kept kind of snap

at me and I kept going.

261

:

You are so adorable.

262

:

You are so cute.

263

:

And he was like, I also helped

a snapping turtle move across

264

:

the road on another day.

265

:

y'all that word snap is like an

understatement if you've ever seen

266

:

a snapping turtle snap, it is woo.

267

:

I think I peed a little

when, tried to get me.

268

:

Lacey: I am so glad there are people like

you in the world doing that work, Sarah.

269

:

' cause it's never gonna be me, but

I'm glad that you exist to do it

270

:

Sara: I am a bit of a nutter butter.

271

:

well this was so fun

recounting our joy moments.

272

:

I hope somebody out there, at least

one person just had a little moment

273

:

of joy just hearing our joy moments

and laughing about the teeth market.

274

:

as always, if you have joy moments that

you wanna share, we want to hear them.

275

:

We want to amplify them.

276

:

And remember if joy moments, you're

like, I don't have joy moments.

277

:

it's anything that makes you happy,

anything that made you smile, anything

278

:

that brightened your day, anything

that you enjoyed it, just anything that

279

:

felt good, within the limits of pg.

280

:

Lacey: We're glad that other

things make you feel good.

281

:

We just don't need to be a part of it.

282

:

Sara: Well, thank you Lacey.

283

:

I had so much fun this morning.

284

:

Lacey: Me too.
